What is the Social Security fax number?

  • Social Security has no single national fax number for forms and documents. Each local office has its own.
  • Enter your ZIP code in the Social Security Office Locator to find your local office's fax number. The locator also shows its mailing address.
  • Almost every office fax number starts with 833, a toll-free area code.
  • If a letter from Social Security asked you for something, use the fax number on that letter.
  • For a hearing, use the 833 fax number at the top of the notices from the hearing office handling your case.
  • To ask the Appeals Council to review a hearing decision (Form HA-520), fax 1-833-509-0817.

Take the number from Social Security, not from a directory site. Office numbers can change, and a wrong number means a failed send.

Which forms and documents can you fax to Social Security?

From Social Security's own pages:

  • Forms and documents for your local office. Social Security takes them by fax, mail or the office drop box.
  • Medicare Part B sign-up: Form CMS-40B and Form CMS-L564, with evidence of employment, to your local office.
  • Appeal forms SSA-561 (Request for Reconsideration) and HA-501 (Request for Hearing), to your local office.
  • Documents for a hearing, to the hearing office's 833 fax number.
  • Form HA-520, to the Appeals Council at 1-833-509-0817.

Social Security also accepts many of these documents online, and its appeal pages call filing online the preferred way.

Steps

  1. Fill out and sign the forms. Gather any documents Social Security asked for.
  2. Open ClearFax and scan the pages with the camera, or import PDFs from Files.
  3. Check the page order. Remove any page you don't want to send.
  4. Enter your office's fax number. ClearFax checks the number before you pay.
  5. Check the pages and the price, then send.
  6. Follow the fax network's status as it sends.
  7. Keep the receipt PDF from your history.

ClearFax adds a cover page that is never billed. Put your name and a phone number on it.

What ClearFax does with your pages

  • Your pages are deleted from our server once the fax reaches a final status.
  • Our fax provider holds a copy until it expires on their own schedule.
  • Faxes are sent in black and white.

Confirmation

Every fax that goes through gets a receipt PDF: destination, page count, when it was sent and completed, the fax network's result, and a support code.

A successful send means the fax network reported the transmission complete. It doesn't confirm that Social Security has reviewed or accepted your documents. To check, contact your local office.

If the fax fails

  • If the fax network reports a failed or partial send, your purchase isn't used up.
  • One purchase covers one successful fax, and another try with the same pages is included. The app shows the exact number of attempts before you pay.
  • You can fix the fax number and resend at no extra charge, with the same pages.
  • If every attempt fails, the purchase ends and the app shows your job ID.

Questions

What is the Social Security fax number?

There is no single national fax number for forms and documents. Each local Social Security office has its own. Enter your ZIP code in the Social Security Office Locator at ssa.gov/locator to get your office's fax number. If a letter from Social Security asked you for something, use the fax number on that letter.

Why does the fax number start with 833?

Social Security office fax numbers are toll-free numbers, and almost all of them use the 833 area code. ClearFax sends to them like any other US number. The price depends on the number of pages.

Can I fax my Medicare Part B sign-up forms?

Yes. Social Security says you can fax or mail Form CMS-40B and Form CMS-L564, with your evidence of employment, to your local Social Security office.

Can Social Security fax me back through ClearFax?

No. ClearFax only sends faxes. It cannot take incoming faxes and does not give you a fax number.

Does a successful send mean Social Security has my documents?

A successful send means the fax network reported the transmission complete, not that a person read or accepted it. To check, call your local office or Social Security at 1-800-772-1213.
